The salaries of government employees living in Maungdaw will be doubled during the months of October, November, and December.
This was allowed as a special case, said the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, U Maung Maung Win. All of the government employees living and working in the 98 townships and 2856 villages that make up Maungdaw will receive this temporary raise in salary.
“We decided to increase salaries given the current circumstances. All government employees, including police officers, are eligible,” said U Maung Maung Win, reports 7Day Daily.
It was clarified, however, that the raise is only for government employees, and not applicable to military members stationed in the region. According to U Maung Maung Win, the ministry of defense is responsible for the military personnel and it is up to them whether or not the latter will receive similar benefits.
Last month, deadly attacks on three border posts in Maungdaw, located in Rakhine state, left at least nine police officers dead. Since then, there has been mounting conflict between the military and the Buddhist majority living there, and the region’s Rohingya population.
