Golden arches not coming to the golden land: Thousands fooled by fake McDonald’s Myanmar page leave angry reviews

You know the old adage “If it’s on the internet, it must be true”? Well, thousands of Myanmar social media users live their lives by it… and thousands also found out yesterday that maybe they shouldn’t.

Yesterday afternoon, ‘McDonald’s Myanmar’ set up a Facebook page that garnered nearly 10,000 likes in less than 24 hours (at time of writing, the exact number was 8,656).

In their first post, the page started a contest where 20 winners would get the chance to participate in a ‘taste test’ taking place this September in preparation for the country’s very first McDonald’s. EXCITING STUFF.

All users had to do was like the page, like and share the post, and post a screenshot of the shared post in a comment underneath. What a relatively easy task to complete for a chance to participate in an official McDonald’s taste test, right? We mean, who knows what goes on at one of those things?!

The competition racked up thousands of entries, that is, until people began realizing that literally anyone could slap the McDonald’s logo on a Facebook page and call it an ‘official’ page, and that, well, someone had.

While fake news aren’t new to the internet, a lot of users seemed genuinely taken aback that anyone would do such a horrible thing.

It also turns out that Myanmar people take their McDonald’s very seriously. Judging by the reviews, there were a lot of people who were really looking forward to the golden arches arriving in the golden land, and who are now really, really angry that it’s all been a scam. How angry?

Reeally angry:

So angry that this user even calls the fake page’s admin a ‘son of the bitch’ and makes the very good point that “You can lie about anything else, but lying about a McDonald’s shop opening up is a dick move”:

On the other hand, some people seem to have gone to bed dreaming of a McDonald’s buffet:

Let’s hope someone’s told Ian the news:

So yeah, in case you didn’t know, the page is fake:

Seriously, it’s as fake as plastic:

To be honest, we’re just as appalled as everyone else that a page with a cover photo watermarked ‘BestFBcover.com’ is actually not an official McDonald’s page. Who could’ve seen that coming?
