Get ready to pay tax on your mobile top-ups

First, the bad news:

If you subscribe to Ooredoo, Telenor or Myanmar Post and Telecommunications (in other words, if you use a mobile phone in Myanmar) expect to be taxed 5 percent on every top-up starting on June 1.

The little-enforced law is finally being applied after a yearlong exemption, according to the Myanmar Times, citing a government statement.

Users received text messages announcing the irritating tax on Monday and today.

“As per Union tax law, all top up amounts will pay commercial tax of 5% starting from 1st June, 2015,” Myamar Posts and Telecommunications told its customers, adding no other details.

And now, the good news:

SIM card prices aren’t changing.
