A French animator made a bleak but adorable sci-fi film set in Myanmar

Imagine if humanity died out and dragons from space landed on Bagan. What would they think? That’s the premise of a new short science fiction film by French animator Loïc Bramoullé.

He visited Myanmar in December 2014 to shoot images of the ancient temple site to use for reference.

The resulting film, ‘Strange Alloy’, is a meditation on religion, philosophy and the future of the human race that would be solemn, but for the main character, a space dragon, who looks like this:

“They had a great civilization,” says the space dragon. “But in the end they lacked something. They didn’t find their true philosophical alchemy. Maybe they taught their kids competition instead of empathy. Everything collapsed very slowly.”

Bramoullé told playmagazine.com that he was reading studies about clandestine operations during the Cold War and Buddhism during the production period.

“That’s where the grim but peaceful tone of the film comes from,” he said.

As for the space dragons, they’re distinctly superior beings to humans, apparently.

“They are not interested by any of earth’s remaining resources but they are immensely interested by the history of the civilization that appeared here, for the impact that can have on their own philosophies,” said Bramoullé.

Makes sense. They want to find out why we screwed up the world.

“To be able to explore the surface, they’ve been xenoforming the atmosphere, with minimal impact on the biosphere, with immense self building structures made of an alloy mixing earth less exotic mineral, called bauxite, and artificial nano organisms.”

Um, yeah.

“Now they are able to breath, the structures are entering a phase of controlled molecular decay that will leave the earth untouched, as the sanctuary it is for them.

“As they are cold blooded beings, and after evolving free from the reptilian brain, they did not develop death-fearing religions, but rather a bunch of philosophies aiming for the connection of everything, and the decryption of the world.”

Ok! That’s it folks. Onto Homeland.
