Fourth telecom operator to get license this month

Myanmar’s fourth telecommunications operator will be granted a license this month, the Posts and Telecommunications Department has announced.

The license will be granted to a partnership between Viettel, a company owned by the Vietnamese defense ministry; Myanmar National Telecom Holding Public Ltd, a consortium of 11 Myanmar companies; and Myanmar Economic Corporation, which is owned by the Myanmar military.

The partnership comes with an investment of US$2 billion over 15 years.

The new telecoms operator will rent pre-existing fiber lines and towers to run its network.
