The flyover at 8 mile has finally opened

Drivers headed for the airport can breathe a little easier: the new flyover at 8 Mile, on the corner of Kabar Aye Pagoda and Pyay Roads, finally opened yesterday.

The months-long construction process caused major build-ups on the road to Yangon International.

“Now, no one needs to wait at the traffic light,” Than Swe from Crown Advanced Construction, which supervised the project, told the Global New Light of Myanmar.

“The drivers can easily drive along the Pyay Road to the new highway including Yangon International Airport.”

The four-lane overpass, which cost K15.5 billion (about $7 million), opened 15 days ahead of schedule.

It is just one among several controversial flyover projects the city has undertaken in recent months in an attempt to ease Yangon’s worsening traffic crisis.

MPs have questioned whether the overpasses are worth their high cost, with Yangon Mayor Hla Myint saying they had little impact on easing congestion.
