Flooding kills at least 4 in Rakhine

At least 4 people have been killed in Rakhine State flooding as the senior official for the area scrambles back from a presidential trip to deal with the crisis.

In Taungup city water levels reached five feet over the past few days, affecting thousands, while aid organizations have had trouble reaching victims due to flooded roads, 7Day Daily reported, citing additional problems such as dirty drinking water and houses that have literally floated away in the deluge.

Taungup has had its share of tragedy. In June of 2012, 10 Muslims were killed there as a result of sectarian violence.

According to the report, across the state, patients have been moved from hospitals to dry ground. Chief Minister Maung Maung Ohn also cancelled his trip to Mongolia with President Thein Sein to return.

“I thought that it was just normal flooding. But I asked permission from the president to leave as the rain was continuing,” he said.

The worst may be over, however, as water levels are decreasing, according to 7Day Daily.
