Flood volunteer dies in car crash on way back from relief work

A 30-year-old man killed in a car accident while returning from flood relief efforts in Magwe Division on Sunday has been praised as a “great volunteer”.

The accident happened on the highway to Yangon near Daikoo Township at around 1pm.

Ko Thapo, also known as Naing Htoo Aung, was working with Online Volunteers of Disaster Recovery for Myanmar delivering supplies.

He had returned to Myanmar from Singapore, where he is based, to assist with relief efforts.

“We are very sad for the loss of a great volunteer like him,” the Yangon-based Youth Volunteer Network said in a statement.

Severe flooding has claimed at least 103 lives and affected more than one million people across the country in recent weeks.

One other volunteer, a young woman, has been confirmed dead since aid efforts began, while a Myanmar Red Cross worker is missing.
