Talk about a wake-up call.
At around 7am this morning, an earthquake struck Yangon Region, sending short but shaky tremors throughout city townships.
The quake measured 4.4 on the Richter scale, 7Day News Journal reported.
U Kyaw Moe Oo, the deputy managing director of the Weather and Forecasting Department, said in the article that the quake struck at 7:42am at the mouth of the Yangon River, 48 miles southwest of the city proper.
Earthquakes over 4.0 on the Richter Scale are not uncommon in Myanmar, but experts have warned for the past few years that Yangon is unprepared to cope if a major earthquake hits the city.
This is the third since the beginning of the year, with a 4.8-magnitude earthquake hitting Yangon in mid-January and a massive 6.7 striking near the India-Myanmar border days after the New Year.
