Father of Shan State prisoner offered nearly $20,000 to free son: police

The dramatic showdown involving prisoners, police and a group of armed men in Shan State earlier this month ended with a whimper as authorities have captured many involved in the plot, which was allegedly set into motion by an inmate’s father.

Initially, the job went off without a hitch. Four men held up a prisoner transport after a court hearing in Taunggyi on June 15, freeing one individual, 23-year-old Khun Nan, who had been arrested for drug possession.

That led to a chase and manhunt in which police captured six people thought to be involved in the caper, according to the Democratic Voice of Burma. On Saturday, Khun Nan was caught hiding west of Taunggyi. He was in the woods and packing heat Rambo-style.

In a twist even more reminiscent of a Hollywood action flick, authorities told DVB that the “mastermind” was Khun Nan’s father, U Taw, who offered to pay the equivalent of $17,900 for the daring operation. He and another suspect that took part in the raid have yet to be caught, and it was unclear whether he already delivered the money.
