The Farmer Journal reporter attacked on the street in Mandalay

Just a few days after the murder of a local journalist in Monywa for his work on illegal logging, a Mandalay-based reporter was badly beaten up yesterday evening. As of now, there are no confirmed connections between the two incidents.

The most recent victim, Kyaw Thura Myo, was an employee of The Farmer Journal, an outlet that specializes in agricultural and livestock-related news.

The attack occurred around 9:30 pm on December 14. Kyaw Thura Myo was coming home on his motorcycle when he was jumped by four men on Sabei Phyu lane off 70th Street, between 32nd and 33rd.

The Farmer published a press release earlier today, noting that Kyaw Thura Myo had worked with them since 2012 when the publication was first established.

“He diligently reported on Mandalay and the surrounding areas without fail,” the press release wrote.

It’s unclear whether the crime is related to any stories Kyaw Thura Myo might be investigating.

“We’ve opened a case, and are currently doing all we can to help Ko Kyaw Thura Myo make a full recovery. We request that the police investigate the attack on Ko Kyaw Thura Myo and find out what happened as soon as possible.”

He is currently receiving treatment at Mandalay General Hospital’s Brain and Neurology department.

We’re sending our best wishes to Kyaw Thura Myo and his family, and we hope that he makes a full and speedy recovery.
