Fake gun-wielding gold shop robber arrested in Taunggyi

A man who robbed a gold shop while threatening staff with a fake gun was arrested last week after making off with K20 million (US$14,640) worth of gold and jewelry.

The robber entered the Lone Wan gold shop on Friday and told owner Moe Zet that he wanted to buy some gold but had to withdraw cash from a CB Bank first.

“He came back from the bank and told me that he hadn’t withdrawn the money yet. He said he wanted to take photos of the items, so I displayed them on the counter,” Moe Zet told Eleven. “He then rang someone and said he had got the money.”

During the conversation, the robber gestured toward the shop owner with his hand in his pocket and claimed he had a gun.

He took all gold and jewelry and pointed the gun at my wife. I immediately knew that his gun was fake,” Moe Zet said.
Moe Zet lunged at the robber, who then threw the gun at him.

“I managed to avoid the gun and tried to grab hold of his waist, but he then ran into the Ocean Center car park, where I asked for help. The robber was arrested by security staff. He had been hiding in a room. We contacted the police, and the police took him away,” Moe Zet said.

The suspect is being detained at the Taunggyi Township police station.
