Factory shut down after making ketchup from ‘broken rice, dye and unknown chemicals’

It hasn’t been a good week for food safety in Myanmar. On Tuesday, a diner claimed that Yangon’s Manhattan Fish Market had dished up a maggot in her food.

Now, it transpires that a factory making condiments in Mandalay has been putting all kinds of crazy sh*t in its products.

The good news is that the Mandalay City Development Committee has shuttered the place, which was producing ketchup from “broken rice, dye and unknown chemicals rather than other relevant ingredients, like tomatoes”, according to a statement.

The Quail Chili Ketchup enterprise in Aungmyathazan Township also posed a fire hazard due to its use of heated pans on top of wooden flooring, the Irrawaddy reported.
