A hog badger was seized by security personnel at a market in Mohnyin, Kachin State, on Wednesday.
“The hog badger is an endangered species,” Indawgyi Lake Wildlife Sanctuary administrator U Maung Win told the Global New Light of Myanmar.
“It is now undergoing veterinary treatment in the forest,” he said.
The hog badger is native to Central and Southeast Asia, and its conservation status is classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The global population is thought to be in decline as a result of poaching.
The mammal is not wary of humans, which may make it more vulnerable to capture. It is omnivorous, and it marks its territory with urine.
