Election campaign period to begin September 8

First the election date was announced for November 8. Now cometh the official campaign start.

Tin Aye, the chairman of Myanmar’s Union Election Commission, has said that candidates can hit the streets and start knocking on doors on September 8. That’s two months before the election. However, politicians and organizers can’t campaign inside military areas because, well, the military wouldn’t like that, Xinhua Myanmar reported.

“It is impossible to make election campaign inside Myanmar military [areas]. I think the Myanmar Military would not accept it,” he said. “But it is possible to go and make campaign in areas around military compounds. If soldiers and their families will be interested, they will come and listen. But it is possible to send pamphlets into the military compound.”
