Eight miners have been confirmed dead after an explosion caused a coal mine to collapse in Minbu, Magway Region, on Monday.
Seven of the deceased were Myanmar nationals, and one was Chinese. A member of the local fire department said some of the victims were crushed, while others suffocated.
Two bodies were recovered on Monday, six on Tuesday, and the final two today.
The blast was caused by a malfunction in the pipe that pumped oxygen into the mine. It occurred at a depth between 45 and 90 meters. The reverberation of the pipe caused the mine to collapse.
Two Myanmar miners and two Chinese supervisors who were injured by the blast have been hospitalized.
Magway Region is home to legal 40 coal mines and several other unlicensed ones. The mines have been targeted by popular protests several times over the last few years. Residents claim the mines lack transparency, fail to protect miners, and damage the environment.
