Dozens of bus lines in Yangon suspended for lack of CCTV cameras

‘Caught on camera’ is apparently not a thing for buses operating out of Yangon’s vast Aung Mingalar Bus Terminal.

Authorities have suspended more than 60 lines using the station for not installing a minimum of two CCTV cameras in their vehicles, Myanmar Business Today reported this week.

“We have repeatedly warned them before suspending their businesses operations. If they follow the regulations, we will allow them to operate again,” U Nyunt Wai, the chairman of the motor vehicle supervisory committee for Yangon Region, was quoted as saying.

The terminal is the largest in the city, with some 180 lines operating out of it, according to the Myanmar Business Today report.

“The installation of these cameras is for the safety of the customers. We have asked each bus line to install two CCTV cameras,” U Nyunt Wai said.

Yangon’s buses, largely operated by private firms, are not renowned for stellar customer service. Few buses run into the evening, leading late-night commuters to take unlicensed vehicles in which problems, like getting beaten up, have been known to arise.
