With scores of pagodas badly damaged following last week’s earthquake near the tourist site of Bagan, many visitors are probably wondering how many of the ancient monuments are actually accessible.
We’ve got some good news for you. The Ministry of Tourism and Hotels have published a very useful map showing, in detail, which pagodas are open for business – and to what extent. You can download a high-res version here.
Repairs are ongoing at the site, in central Myanmar, after a 6.8 magnitude quake struck nearby on Wednesday, damaging close to 400 pagodas.
Some of the sites most popular with tourists remain fully open. The Ananda, That Byin Nyu and Shwezigone pagodas are all marked with green circles, meaning there has been no disruption.
Many others, however, are marked with yellow triangles – partially open – or red squares – closed.
The map also contains a few warnings for visitors: don’t go into closed sites, don’t bother the repair workers and, please, don’t steal bits of Bagan for bragging rights. Not cool.
