Dengue fever cases are down across Yangon, govt says

There were far fewer cases of dengue fever in the first five months of this year compared to the same period in 2015, according to government statistics.

Between January and the end of May this year there were 280 cases, and four deaths. Last year the same time frame brought 968 case and six deaths, according to the state-backed Global New Light of Myanmar.

The Department of Health put the dramatic drop down to increased dengue fever prevention measures, saying authorities are taking action in 44 townships.

“Last year’s high volume of dengue fever patients was a catalyst for the beginning of dengue protection and prevention activities from the start of the year,” Dr Mon Mon Kyaw from the Department of Health told Global New Light.

Prevention activities were carried out in schools, which were cleared of mosquito larvae and sprayed with repellent.

“Students make up a third of the whole population, so it’s important that special attention is paid to their wellbeing,” said Dr Mon Mon Kyaw.
