Deaths from traffic accidents in Mandalay Division near 300

In the first five months of this year, more than 270 people died in traffic accidents in Mandalay Division.

From January through May, there were 927 accidents with 279 deaths and 1,639 injuries, 7Day News Journal reported, citing the Mandalay Division Traffic Police Station.

Many crashes occurred in the hilly Pyin Oo Lwin District, which saw 209 accidents and 70 deaths.

A resident of Kyaukse district told the newspaper that a lack of police in rural areas made it difficult to enforce traffic laws.

Citing the Ministry of Transportation, 7Day News Journal reported that Mandalay has 80,000 cars and 570,000 motorbikes.

Mandalay, unlike Yangon, allows the use of motorbikes.

Authorities did not say if the number of traffic accidents represented an increase or decrease from the same period last year.
