A victim who was injured in the Magwe KTV fire from earlier this month died yesterday morning while still in hospital, authorities confirmed to Eleven. The victim had been left in critical condition by injuries sustained during the incident.
The death of the unidentified woman who was receiving treatment at the Magwe Regional General Hospital now brings the fire’s official death toll up to 16.
Eleven men and four women died in the blaze that broke out on the night of April 2. The fire consumed the top floor of the Shwe Myat Min Thamee KTV bar, which lacked proper emergency exits as it was actually a residential home that had been converted into a KTV and restaurant.
A local fire official said the electrical system had apparently overheated and set fire to the sound-proof lining inside the singing rooms.
The incident has prompted police to crack down on makeshift KTV’s in the region. Police Captain Sein Aung, head of the Magwe Myoma Police Station, told Eleven that they had already shut down 26 KTV’s since April 11, and will be investigating each one to ensure that all the proper regulations are in place.
Police have opened two cases against the owner of the Shwe Myat Min Thamee for negligence.
