Crimes and Misdemeanors: More than 900 cases brought by Yangon Police as part of citywide crackdown

In just the first 20 days of its vaunted 100-day campaign to end crime, Yangon Region police have opened more than 900 criminal cases, the Global New Light of Myanmar reported.

However, most of the cases are for petty crime.

The crackdown, which is part of the government’s larger 100-day plan (though it is seriously unclear how all of the various plans tie together), started on May 1, a month after Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy came to power.

In total there were 902 cases, New Light reported, including 171 counts of possession (assuming that means drugs and/or weapons), 96 gambling cases and 189 for “alcohol excise.”
