Couple sought after allegedly drugging a taxi driver and stealing his car

Yangon police are searching for a couple who allegedly served their taxi driver a spiked drink and stole his car when he passed out.

The suspects, a man aged around 30 and a woman in her mid-twenties, are accused of staging the theft during a journey through Yangon’s Hlegu Township on Friday afternoon.

“They hired the cab until Hlegu and then asked to stop near a restaurant,” an unnamed police officer told 7 Days. “And they offered palm juice to the driver. When he refused, they served him a can of drink.”

The driver, from Kyi Myin Daing Township, said he passed out before he could get back into the car, a Toyota Probox. When he woke up, hours later, he was lying beside a tree. The car was gone.

“The car is a[Toyota] Probox type and is worth over 100 lakhs ($9200),” said the officer. “They took the driver’s license as well as K30,000 (about $32) cash.”
