Couple accused of secretly burying their adopted infant’s body

A couple from the town of Thanlyin — located across the river from Yangon — have been accused of burying their dead infant under their house compound.

The accused are 48-year-old Aye Thaung and 36-year-old Aye Aye Mar, who live in Thanlyin’s Koon Chan Kone neighborhood. The couple had adopted the baby from Mya Thet Khine, who also lived in that neighborhood. The child was born at the end of last month.

The couple doesn’t have any other children. Authorities also revealed that the couple and the birth mom were actually related.

An officer from Thanlyin Myo Mya Township told 7Day Daily, “The infant died a week after they adopted him. The couple secretly buried the corpse within their compound, but neighbors found out. The baby had been sick since birth.”

After neighbors alerted authorities about what the couple had done, police launched an investigation and discovered the body of the baby buried inside the compound.

The Thanlyin police station has opened a case against Aye Thaung and Aye Aye Mar under Section 318 (“Concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body”) of the Myanmar Penal Code.
