Container truck kills novice monks, driver arrested after leaving scene

Two young monks were killed this week when a container truck hit them in Bago region’s Kanyut Kwin township.

The boys, aged 12 and 13, were walking along a road and collecting alms for their monastery at 5am on June 26 when they were struck, the Voice reported.

“A container truck hit those novices who are collecting alms every morning. Now police are investigating the driver,” a 30-year-old resident was quoted as saying.

The truck was reportedly bringing pineapples from Shan State to Yangon’s Thiri Mingalar market.

Another novice monk was wounded.

The 41-year-old driver kept going, the Voice reported, but was later arrested in another township.
