With Yangon’s rainy season around the corner, city officials have a message for city residents: please don’t throw trash into drains and stop them up.

An article in Tuesday’s edition of the state-backed newspaper The Global New Light of Myanmar referred specifically to the Aung Chan Tha drain, which carries rainwater and other drainage through a handful of townships before emptying out into the Hline River.

City workers have been removing garbage from the drain since earlier this month, the article said.

“If people abide by discipline elsewhere, the environment will be clean and pleasant,” U Tin Oo, a township development affairs official was quoted as saying.
