A second person suspected of kidnapping a child in Mandalay has been killed.
The man was violently beaten on Strand Road on January 14, the Myanmar Times reported, following a similar incident days earlier. Two people have also been injured after being erroneously identified as kidnappers.
“People say they saw the man holding a child’s hand and leading him away, so they started beating him,” a police officer from the Mandalay Region Police Office told the newspaper.
Four people are being questioned.
It’s unclear where the rumors of child kidnapping are starting, and why they are so quickly spiraling out of control.
