Cherry FM allowed back on air after agreeing to broadcast ‘impartial’ reports

Cherry FM, the radio station linked to Shwe Mann that was shut down last week after his ouster, came back on the air last night after signing a deal with the Ministry of Information to broadcast only “impartial” reports.

Only in Myanmar, right?

According to the Myanmar Times, station general manager U Than Htwe Zaw said management didn’t mind because Cherry FM is more of an “entertainment” station anyway.

“We have not done any reporting that could be considered impartial. Normally we just air reports from domestic newspapers and weekly journals,” he told the newspaper.

Seven other radio stations also signed the agreement.

Cherry FM, which was said to have a reach of up to 30 million people, or roughly half the population, is run by Daw Zay Zin Latt, who is married to Shwe Mann’s son Toe Naing Mann.

The Ministry of Information admitted to silencing the station last week for fear that it would broadcast “alarming” stories about the political turbulence going on within the USDP, according to the Times. Though still speaker of the lower house and a party member, Shwe Mann and several of his allies were removed from positions of leadership within the USDP.

Can’t wait to hear some of that totally unbiased, fair and balanced impartial reporting on Cherry FM.
