The Supervisory Committee for Motor Vehicle Imports have announced that the last day to file for a vehicle import permit under the current importation policies is December 23.
Any car owners who haven’t filed a permit by December 23 will have to wait until January 1, 2017, at which point the new policies will be in place.
Car dealers told 7Day Daily that there hasn’t been much business recently because potential customers are waiting for the new policies to come into effect.
Current vehicle prices have also been jacked up, preventing a lot of citizens from purchasing any cars. The prices of cars dating older than 2011 with 1300cc engines — which will be illegal to import under the new laws — have especially increased.
Under the new import policies, all imported cars intended for personal use must have been manufactured between 2015 and 2017. All imported vehicles must also be left-hand drive. Ever since the announcement was made at the end of last month, several auto experts have pointed out that the latest policies would only hurt low-income citizens who can’t afford the newer models’ higher price tags.
