Calls to move Speaker’s Corner rejected

Calls to move Yangon’s Speaker’s Corner to a more central location were rejected in parliament on Friday.

Phone Myint Aung, a lawmaker, had suggested it be moved from its somewhat out-of-the-way location in a grassy field that is part of Kyaikkasan Stadium in Tamwe township.

But Kyaw Kyaw Win, Deputy Minister at the President’s Office, dismissed the move as impossible, according to state-run newspaper the Global New Light of Myanmar.

He cited traffic congestion caused by previous protests at downtown locations like Sule Pagoda and Mahabandoola Park.
