The police officer who whipped out his revolver and threatened to shoot residents during a meeting in Kachin state’s Hpakant township on September 6 has apologized and been suspended while authorities investigate the matter.
But what actions will he face?
That’s unclear, but calls for punitive or disciplinary measures are growing, with some saying an apology isn’t enough.
Lower House MP for Hpakant U Tin Soe told the Myanmar Times that he will push for legal action, though he didn’t specify what kind.
He could not be reached on Friday for additional comment.
Human rights lawyer Robert San Aung also said charges should be brought.
“Police are meant to protect the people,” he told the paper. “The police disciplinary body should take action against him. They cannot let him go.”
The officer, Soe Zaw Zaw, has apparently been detained by local authorities, though he doesn’t appear to be under arrest.
He has not spoken publically about the incident.
