According to the No. 2 Traffic Police Force, over 50 vehicles were charged for failure to comply with the new seatbelt law within just two days of said law coming into effect.
Large Dyna trucks and BM buses make up the majority of culprits who have broken the law, which states that all passengers inside any motor vehicle must wear their seatbelt, or face arrest and a fine ranging from MMK30,000 to K300,000.
Police have also made it clear that regardless of the purpose of the vehicle (i.e. professional or personal), all passengers need to be wearing their seatbelts; they’ve stressed that this is especially important for school buses carrying schoolchildren.
It’s no surprise that Myanmar people don’t like wearing seatbelts, but really guys, it’s such an easy and important task that will save you a hefty fine and, more importantly, might help save your life.
