A total of 118 traffic police from Yangon Region were disciplined last year for offences including boozing on the job, not showing up and taking bribes, according to newly released data.
Some lost their jobs while others were prosecuted, senior members of the unit told the Voice Weekly.
“If they get weaker in their responsibilities, we notice them,” said senior officer Aung Ko Oo.
Corruption is considered rampant among traffic police in Yangon, a city burdened with a worsening gridlock crisis.
One taxi driver told the Voice: “There are still police asking for money from drivers who break the law. They should take action on that kind of corruption.”
