Bagan is so crowded that tourists are sleeping in restaurants: official

There have apparently been so many visitors to Bagan this high season that some have been forced to sleep at local restaurants because hotels were full, a local tourism official has claimed.

Since Myanmar began opening up in recent years, the number of visitors has increased and Bagan, home to more than 3,000 ancient pagodas, is the country’s biggest tourist draw.

“There are so many tourists this year,” Win Maung, secretary of the Bagan Region Development Association, told Myitmakha News Agency. “Numbers are increasing year upon year. Tourists have had to sleep in restaurants because hotels were fully booked.”

Myanmar welcomeed 4.68 million tourists in 2015, according to government records, and is expecting more this year.
