Aung San Suu Kyi says vote for NLD in election that NLD may boycott

Will Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) contest the elections slated for November? That’s a tough one. So far, she has avoided an unequivocal YES, saying recently that boycotting the poll remains an option.

In a statement that made the party’s position even more confusing, on Monday she urged her own constituents in Yangon Region’s Kawhmu Township to vote…for the NLD.

“Let me tell you frankly, in the presence of journalists,” Suu Kyi said, as quoted by the Irrawaddy. “Take everything U Khin Shwe gives you, but vote for the NLD.”

U Khin Shwe is her Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) competition for Kawhmu votes.

Could her statement signal that the NLD does intend to jump on the ballot? We’ll have to wait and see.
