Aung San Suu Kyi approved to run in elections

Aung San Suu Kyi’s application to run as an MP in the November 8 election has been approved by the Union Election Commission.

Myat Soe, Yangon Region Southern District Election Subcommission Chairman at the UEC, told the Voice Weekly that there had been no objections to her application to represent Kawhmu, near to the city.

“She has passed the test,” he said.

Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of Myamar’s main opposition party, the National League for Democracy, has faced numerous objections in past elections.

Ahead of the 2012 by-elections, which the NLD dominated, U Tin Yi of the Unity and Peace Party questioned her Myanmar citizenship but his objection was thrown out.

Suu Kyi is still ineligible for the presidency under constitutional rules that prevent candidates from having foreigners in their immediate family. Her children are British.
