Attorney-General promises to punish court officials who ban the public from hearings

Myanmar’s new attorney-general has promised to take action against court officials who stop members of the public from attending hearings, the Global New Light of Myanmar reports.

Aside from sensitive cases involving minors, Myanmar citizens technically have the right to show up to any trial they like and sit in. Because, you know, justice.

But, in practice, they aren’t always allowed to stay there. Because, er, Myanmar.

Myint Lwin, MP for Pazundaung township raised that point in parliament on Wednesday, saying that some people – especially journalists – had been told to leave by officials.

In response, Union Attorney-General Soe Nyunt, recently appointed to the position following the change in government earlier this year, said that such officials would be punished.

All members of the public have the right to observe trials, he said.

Good. Now let’s hold him to that.
