Artists, designers gather to raise awareness ahead of vote

Nearly 100 people gathered at Yangon’s tech hub Phandeeyar over the weekend for a two-day “Election Createathon.”

The goal: produce a variety of catchy educational tools that will raise voter awareness ahead of Myanmar’s historic election on November 8.

More than 70 contributors attended on Saturday and Sunday, including composers, singers, filmmakers, photographers, performers, designers, animators and cartoonists.

Michael Suantak, program manager at Phandeeyar, said public interest in the election is still low.

“We’ll [first] gather the problems of civil society organizations that are working on the voter education process. Then we’ll find solutions together with artists who can help with the voter education process,” he said.

Over 50 items were produced at the end of the “createathon”. There were short films, pamphlet designs, posters, cartoons and much more.

Here are a few examples, many of which feature a hand shaped like a check mark to signal ticking off your choices on a ballot.
