Another lawsuit against police involved in student crackdown planned

Student activist Min Thway Thit says he plans to file a lawsuit against the police for injuries suffered and possessions lost during a crackdown on protests against a national education bill in March.

Min Thway Thit told 7Day Daily that when authorities in Letpadan beat and arrested scores of protestors, they also confiscated thousands of dollars and a number of phones. He claims the items submitted to the prison don’t match the total taken.

“I am collecting the data of how many police attacked at which place and which part of their [the students’] bodies were injured,” Min Thway Thit, one of those detained, said. “And I am also collecting the list of things that were lost and not in the list of the prison. Then, I will discuss with lawyers and post it to the court.”

Many of the students were sent to Thayarwaddy prison and charged with a number of offenses. This week a small group of them ended a hunger strike that lasted weeks.

The case is a noble idea, but probably doomed to fail.

In August, a judge tossed out a similar lawsuit filed by the main lawyer for the students, Robert San Aung.
