Another interfaith activist arrested in Mandalay

Pwint Phyu Latt, a Muslim interfaith activist from Mandalay, was arrested there on Sunday about a week after police brought in one of her colleagues.

Both Zaw Zaw Latt and Pwint Phyu Latt are in police custody resulting from a trip to Kachin IDP camps in 2013. On the trip they took photos. In one, Zaw Zaw Latt appeared with a gun, though fellow activists say it was just for show.

Pwint Phyu Latt is accused of crossing the border illegally (apparently into India) while Zaw Zaw Latt, who is also Muslim, was arrested for communicating with a “blacklisted organization.”

Other interfaith activists working with them believe they were targeted because of their religion or politics.

“They just called her to ask questions for Zaw Zaw Latt’s case. CID was asking,” Pwint Phyu Latt’s brother told Radio Free Asia. “Then they released her. And they asked her to come again on the 19th … then they didn’t release her.”

Both activists are members of the group Thint Myat Lo Thu Myar, founded by the Abbot Asia Light from Pyin Oo Lwin, which works to reconcile members of different religions.
