Another high-level Myanmar-Thailand meeting, this time in Naypyitaw

Just a week after her own trip to Thailand, Myanmar’s state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi met with Thai deputy prime minister Parawit Wongsuwan in the capital Naypyitaw on Wednesday as part of a two-day visit in which migrant issues were at the top of the agenda.

Suu Kyi’s June 23-25 state visit to Thailand included a stop in Samut Sakhon, where thousands of Myanmar migrants came out hoping to catch a glimpse of the The Lady in the wake of her party’s election victory in November.

Many left disappointed, but the event underscored long-unsettled issues relating to cross-border labor in Thailand, where up to three million migrants work, with roughly half unregistered.

After meeting with Thai junta leader and Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha in Bangkok, agreements on cross-border labor were signed.

During the meeting on Wednesday in Naypyitaw, Suu Kyi and Parawit discussed migrant issues, the repatriation of war refugees from Thailand, cooperation among law enforcement, the Thailand-Myanmar relationship, and the economy, according to a post on the state counsellor’s official Facebook page and the Bangkok Post.

Parawit is also the Defence Minister and on his arrival he met with his counterpart and the Commander-in-Chief of Myanmar’s armed forces Snr. General Min Aung Hlaing.
