As Myanmar’s government appeals for international aid to assist flood victims, one small group is organizing the rescue of those described as “the last to get any attention.”

Animals.

Giving a Future Animal Aid, which describes itself as an NGO “working for stray animals in Myanmar/Burma, mainly in Yangon and Mandalay,” has put together a small team that is headed to Kawlin in Sagaing Division, one of the hardest-hit areas.

At least 47 people have died in the floods, some of the worst weather since Cyclone Nargis in 2008. Many victims have also complained about losing farm animals crucial to their day to day lives. The NGO says it will also help with livestock.

“The official emergency plan is limited and [will] only provide humanitarian aid, leaving tens of thousands animals with no help. A handful of private volunteers are organizing themselves to assist the animals in affected areas,” a post on the group’s Facebook page on August 3 said.

“We have been able to locate and support a local emergency team who will travel to the flooded area of KawLin [sic] in the Sagaing division tomorrow [yesterday]. All donations are given directly to veterinarian aid for the flood victims´ animals, as well as food and disaster help to stray dogs and cats which will get no help otherwise.”

The post continues: “Rescuing these animals also means saving lifestock which is the only income for many poor farmers and stopping the spreading of diseases from animals to humans. Reportedly the numbers of dead and sick cows, buffaloes and dogs are rising as the flooding spreads to other divisions.”
