Amid heat wave, Mandalay residents cool off in the canals

If you thought it was hot in Yangon, try Mandalay where the mercury has been hitting 43 degrees Celsius in recent weeks.

Seeking some relief, residents are heading for the nearby canals, according to a report in today’s Global New Light of Myanmar.

Zeechogon, Yehwet, Yekyi, Shintawgon and Igyi villages in Patheingyi Township are especially popular with young people in the early evening.

“We normally visit the canal in Zechogon Village at around 5pm every weekend to swim,” said one visitor.

A small industry has grown up around the sport, with villagers renting out rubber rings.

Sorry Yangonites – replicating this in the Hlaing Thayar River is probably not advisable.
