Pilot? Check.
Fuel? Check.
Passengers? Check.
Flight attendants? Flight attendants? Um, where are all the flight attendants?
This was more or less the experience on board an Air India flight from Delhi to Yangon one morning this week, as passengers had to wait inside the plane after members of the crew either didn’t get to the airport in time for the 7:10am scheduled departure or didn’t show up, India Today reported, without mentioning the exact date of the flight.
“Passengers were boarded but the management came to know that [a] few crew members have not reached the airport. After almost an hour, when crew members couldn’t reach, the management decided to rope in other crew members so that flight could depart. Finally, this flight took off around 9:15am, with a delay of almost two hours,” a senior Air India official was quoted as saying.
Spending about two hours inside a plane waiting for everyone else to arrive does not sound like a fun way to spend a morning.
Remarkably, another flight bound for Mumbai was delayed the same day, for the same reason, according to the report. Passengers began to protest after they were told the crew was short a few members. It took almost five hours before extra staff turned up.
