5 things to do in Yangon this weekend: February 5

This weekend is shaping up to be a busy one. Because a few things are happening today (Friday) and early Monday, we’re gonna bend the rules a little and lump that all into “the weekend.” We’re also going to have two events at one place.

Music at 50th (Friday)

Get the weekend started right by seeing one of Myanmar’s best-known bands, Side Effect, at 50th Street Bar in downtown Yangon. Music commences at 9pm, so plenty of time between now and then to get ready.

The Super Bowl (also at 50th, but on Monday)

Punk music not your thing? More of a sports person? Well, 50th is showing the Super Bowl on Monday morning, starting at 6am. Just to clarify, that’s American football folks, where men run around and hit each other and get concussions. You can’t miss it.

Chinese New Year at Port Autonomy (Saturday)

It’s the Year of the Monkey, and it’s at Port Autonomy’s leafy location off of Kabaraye Pagoda Road. From 6pm to midnight, eat cold ma la sesame noodles and delicious-sounding cocktails like the Pach Bourbon Black Tea, whatever that is. Specialty dishes and drinks are K5,000 (about $4). At 8m, there’s a “Chinese Lion Dance.”

Gringos Chilangos

Yangon’s newest Mexican restaurant opened almost a week ago on Bo Aung Kyaw Street. It was on last week’s list but that was before we had the chance to try it as the place was completely booked. You should go, but first, read our review here. And definitely call ahead, it seems to fill up fast for dinner.

The Lab

10 percent off your bill at The Lab this weekend, right down the street from Port Autonomy. The deal started a few days ago but lasts through the weekend. Enjoy!
