Hlaingtharyar police have arrested a man for raping an underage girl who kept the attack a secret until her family realized that she was pregnant.
The victim, aged 13, lives in Hlaingtharyar with her family. Sources who spoke to The Voice explained that the girl began complaining of a stomach ache last Thursday. Her older sister took her to a clinic in the neighborhood, but the doctor couldn’t initially tell what was wrong. Wary, the doctor then took an x-ray of the girl’s stomach, and it was revealed that she was already six months pregnant.
When her sister made her tell her what happened, the girl finally admitted that she had been raped six months ago. According to an officer at the Hlaingtharyar police station, the culprit was a man who lives in the same neighborhood as them. The girl revealed that he had pulled her into a bush on the side of a road and molested her.
Police currently have the perpetrator, 18-year-old Zin Ko Ko, in custody. The girl’s family has opened a case against him under Sections 363 and 376 of the Penal Code for kidnapping and rape.
