All-women hip-hop dance group Swaggers Company is coming to Myanmar

The hip-hop dance crew that has been battling its way across France for the last eight years is coming to Myanmar to spread the message that “women can own the place.”

Swaggers Company will put on two shows in Yangon and Mandalay as part of the Institut Français’ La French Touch Festival.

The company is led by choreographer Marion Motin, who has worked with Madonna, Stromae, and Christine and the Queens.

The performances, titled “In the Middle”, also use light and other displays to convey non-verbal meaning to the audience.

The Yangon show will also include an opening dance performance by 2016 Myanmar Got Talent’s winner and Myanmar Street Dance founder Jimmy Ko Ko and Czech contemporary dancer Lucy Krobova. The performance, titled “Nice to Meet You”, will blend the two dancers’ distinct influences.

La French Touch Festival will span the months of May and June and bring “the best of French culture” to Myanmar. In addition to Swaggers Company’s performances, the programs will feature music, films, and virtual reality.

Catch Swagger Company performing “In the Middle” at Yangon’s National Theatre on Tuesday, May 23, at 8pm. Tickets are K10,000 for adults and K5,000 students and people under 16 years old.

If you’re in Mandalay, head to the National Theatre on Thursday, May 25, at 7pm. Tickets are K5,000 for adults and K3,000 for students and people under 16 years old.
