Photos of Yangon’s circular line make up new exhibit

Few things say ‘Yangon’ like the Yangon Circular Line.

First built by the British, the creaky 30-mile loop is one of the city’s gems. It’s a smooth, inexpensive way to see Yangon without sitting in traffic.

But the circular line is changing. The tracks, trains and stations are being upgraded with assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, or JICA.

It won’t lose its charm but the upgrade will make for a more modern experience. With change on the horizon, photographers took part in a workshop in July to document the hallmark as it is now. The result, the “Yangon Circle Photography Project,” opens tomorrow evening at the Yangon Gallery in People’s Park.

“The purpose of this project was to document the lifestyles revolving around the Yangon Circle Line Train before the station[s] will be improved,” said a post on the gallery’s Facebook page.

The photographs are for sale and the proceeds will go towards flood relief efforts, according to the gallery. The exhibition, which starts at 5pm tomorrow, runs through September 9.

Location: Take Ahlone Road to the People’s Park Compound. It’s near the Planetarium Museum.
