Myanmar painter Hla Tun received three honors at the American Art Awards last month, including one first-place award. Artists from over 50 countries competed in the competition’s 50 categories, which include prizes for photographers, sculptors, and digital artists, as well as painters.
Mandalay-native Hla Tun, 65, won the top prize in the “Landscape with Life” category with his painting “Going to the Field.”
His two other prizes were in same category: “Custom of the Village” tied for fourth place, and “Summer dry zone” tied for fifth. Other prizes in the category were won by painters from Australia, China, Canada, and the US.
The winners were chosen by representatives of the 25 “best” American galleries and museums, which were in turn chosen by the American Art Awards Advisory Board.
The American Art Awards were founded in 2008 by American actor and painter Thom Bierdz. They aim to connect artists from around the world with galleries in the US.
Hla Tun began working as a commercial artist at the age of 20, drawing posters and designs for companies, before eventually focusing on oil paintings that depict Myanmar’s traditional cultures and scenes of rural life. He has participated in 60 group and solo exhibitions.
