Myanmar photographer documents history in Israel

Last week photographer Hongsar Ramonya was in Israel on a funded trip to document an innovation contest in Tel Aviv.

He would end up documenting history as well.

Several days into the trip, Israeli statesman Shimon Peres died at the age of 93.

A day before the funeral on Friday, his body lay in state outside parliament in Jerusalem, and members of the public and officials paid their respects.

Organizers of his trip were able to arrange for Hongsar, who has covered news in Myanmar for years for outlets like Mizzima, to take photos.

His journalistic instincts kicked in, and he was able to get close to the scene in what was otherwise a very tightly controlled area ringed with security and onlookers.

The images, some of which we have published here with his permission, are a small but unique contribution to the history of the moment.

It also in a way represents another page in the long and interesting ties between Myanmar and Israel, which you can read more about here.

You can also watch this footage of former Burmese prime minister U Nu speaking with former Israeli leader David Ben-Gurion.
